The American-led intervention in Syria began in 2014, but the US began supporting the rebels since the Syrian civil war started in 2011. On August 21, 2013 there was a chemical attack in Ghouta, Syria which then US Secretary of State John Kerry blamed Syrian President Bashar Al Assad's government for the chemical attack.
President Obama’s red line had now been crossed for taking action in Syria. The US was going to respond, but a long-serving CIA analyst says he was receiving information from intelligence colleagues that did not go along with Kerry’s assessment of the situation.
“The evidence stunk,” Raymond McGovern, now retired and a political activist, says in an interview with If Americans Knew - a nonprofit organization dedicated to detailing the extent of Israeli influence over American government policy and politicians - published on 17 November 2019. McGovern was a CIA analyst from 1963 to 1990. In the interview he explains Israel’s destructive influence over US policy and over John Kerry when it came to U.S. intervention in Syria.
McGovern claims intelligence agents knew that Turkey was facilitating precursor chemicals into Syria and it was much more likely the rebels were responsible for the attack and that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey told President Obama the sarin gas used was not part of the Syrian government's stock of chemical agents.
Jodi Rudoren, New York Times' Bureau Chief for Tel Aviv, sought out opinions of Israeli senior officials on their preferred outcome in Syria. In an article published on 5 September 2013 “Israel backs Limited Strike against Syria” she says Israeli officials preferred no outcome. Alon Pinkas, a former Israeli consul-general in New York: “This is a playoff situation in which you need both teams to lose, but at least you don’t want one to win — we’ll settle for a tie. Let them both bleed, hemorrhage to death: that’s the strategic thinking here. As long as this lingers, there’s no real threat from Syria.”
Pinkas' statement of 2013 reflects the sentiments of Efraim Halevy, former Director of Mossad. Halevy was interviewed on the Al-Jazeera Network by British journalist Mehdi Hasan on 31 May 2016. Mehdi confronts Halevy on Israel’s support of Syrian rebels and the al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's Syrian proxy. Halevy says Israel has a different relationship with al-Qaeda than the United States, because al-Qaeda has never attacked Israel. Like Pinkas, he too stresses that Israel has no preference on who wins in the war between the Syrian rebels and President Assad. In the interview he admits to aiding the terrorist organization and does not deny the strategic reasoning behind their support.
The United States and its allies responded to the April 2018 Douma chemical attack by striking Syrian military sites despite the lack of substantial evidence to suggest President Bashar al-Assad’s regime was responsible for the attack. But this was the narrative of the U.S. government and mainstream media. On 15 February 2019 independent news source Mint Press ran a story “BBC Producer Says Syria Douma Chemical Attack Footage 'was staged'”. The OPCW engineer's findings support the claim that the gas canisters were placed in position and not dropped from the air.
The Times of Israel reported in April 2017 former Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon as saying ISIS (known as DAESH by its Arabic acronym) “apologized” for their attack on an Israeli unit in the Syrian Golan Heights. In January 2019, the Times of Israel reported that “IDF chief finally acknowledges that Israel supplied weapons to Syrian rebels.”
The US also sanctioned an Israeli former general in December 2018 for $150 million worth of arms sales to both sides fighting in the South Sudan, fueling the conflict in that impoverished country. Interestingly, Syria and Sudan are on the list of the seven countries that General Wesley Clark was told the American Government had plans to go after only weeks after 9/11.
